CVUSD IN-SCHOOL PE PROGRAM

 PRESENTED IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

This specially designed project for 4th grade students in the Coachella Valley Unified School District is a grant program of the Palm Springs Dance Project and underwritten by the Western Wind Foundation. It is a proprietary program developed by dance educator, Shea New, Director of Education for the Palm Springs Dance Project, and is Ca. Dept. of Education VAPA compliant.

CURRICULUM

Week 1 - Defining & Identifying Shape

Week 2 - Personal Space Proprioception

Week 3 - Rhythms & Tempos

Week 4 - Movement Creation & Visual Imagery

Week 5 - Energy & Dynamics

Week 6 – Final Class - Creating A Dance

This project has students explore shape, space, sequence, tempo, rhythms, energy, and more. It provides a platform for expression while developing their kinesthetic awareness, social skills, and cognitive abilities. It will provide healthful physical activity while also assisting children develop their ability to focus and expand their vocabulary skills.

SHEA NEW
PROGRAM DEVELOPER

Shea New serves as adjunct faculty in dance at College of the Desert since 1987 choreographing for Celebration, opera workshops and theatre productions. Her classes include ballet, jazz, tap, theatre dance, dance performance, music theatre workshop and history of dance. She also coached the COD dance team. She is the founder of the McCallum Theatre Palm Desert Choreography Festival.

Shea received her BA in choreography from UC Irvine where she studied with renowned choreographers Eugene Loring, Antony Tudor, Arthur Mitchell, and Joe Tremaine, then furthered her education with Merce Cunningham Dance Company, San Diego Ballet and National Ballet of Canada. Springs Dance Festival, Dance For Life, Village Center for the Arts, Professional Dancers Society and as a board member for the Coachella Valley Arts Alliance and here at The Palm Springs Dance Project.

ANTHONY VEGA
EDUCATOR

Anthony Vega is theFounder and Artistic Director of In Movement Dance. As a proud resident of the Coachella Valley. Anthony’s love of teaching is dedicated to imparting the art of dance while making it accessible to all financial circumstances.

 

Anthony was the Artistic Director for both The Dance Program and Desert Dance company for over 12 years. He also competed as a finalist in the Palm Desert International Dance Festival in a piece choreographed by the incredible Ron Brown. He served as the director and lead choreographer of the Rancho Mirage Performing Arts High School Dance Team for four years, danced in a music video for Arielle Samson, performed as a member of the Academy of Villains during an exhibition set at VIBE 2017, and had the privilege of touring my choreography through Australia as part of the RMHS Performing Arts Program.

GERMAN GOMEZ
EDUCATOR

German Gomez is a passionate and dedicated dance instructor who believes in the transformative power of movement. With a focus on challenging physical capabilities and overcoming limiting beliets, German creates an inclusive and nurturing environment for dancers to flourish. Through innovative teaching methods and captivating choreography, he inspires his students to reach their full potential. German's commitment to ongoing learning and professional development ensures his teaching remains cutting-edge. His impact extends beyond the dance studio, with performances that touch the hearts of audiences. German Gomez continues to inspire individuals to embrace seli-expression and unlock their artistic and personal potential through the power of movement.
